Three Ways To Wear: Swim Cover Up

June 29, 2020 by Jesse at TTT Filed Under: Outfits 1 Comment

It’s that time of year. In hand, a nice cold (Insert: Margarita, Beer, Rosé, Seltzer) while you sit with your toes in the water at your favorite spot. It also means bathing suit season. Some of us love it, some of us dread it. I’m in the middle. Regardless of which side you’re on, your cover up of choice can make you feel more comfortable or more fabulous – and if it’s done well – BOTH.

Whether you are a one piece gal, bikini enthusiast or somewhere in between, it’s rare that you’ll just show up where you’re going in full swim garb. You know, there’s that whole “no shoes, no shirt, no service” thing to think about. Naturally, you need to plan your wardrobe out before leaving the house. I am not the type to do an oversized tee and call it a day. Nope, not me, I like to make things 100 times more complicated than they need to be. There’s nothing wrong with that oversized tee one bit, my clothing attention deficit just gets in the way.

Think of it like a magnetic pull. The closer I get to the door to leave, it’s like my closet literally reaches down and grabs me and is like… “you sure, bro?” “NO, I’M NOT SURE OMG I’LL CHANGE AGAIN”. Ok, maybe it’s a magnetic force, maybe it’s the full length mirror by my door. Either way, it never works out.

No matter the occasion, I’ve put together three ways to style a swimsuit cover up that are comfortable, hot weather-friendly and photo ready.

Outdoor BBQ

Sometimes you go somewhere and swimming is not the focus, but the prospect is there. I get it. You want to be prepared, but you don’t want your bits popping out or your clothing flowing in the way of your cornhole toss (the worst). I personally prefer my clothing flowy during a game of cornhole so I have something to blame my bad throws on. If you are reasonably good, you’ll want to avoid this.

The goal with this look is to be fully clothed, but weather appropriate. I started with a white linen top (this one is from NY&Company). You can see my suit top through it, but I think it works! Bralettes are in style right now also, so even if you didn’t want to wear your suit, you could rock this. I cuffed and ruched the sleeves and kept the last three buttons undone so I could tie it up. If you’re not cool with midriff, that’s okay – just tuck it in.

I have no idea why it’s acceptable for women to wear “jorts” aka jean shorts and why men are mocked. I don’t make the rules, I just occasionally live by them. And have you seen mens’ jorts? Then again, the visual reminds me why it’s unacceptable. Well, ladies, let’s take this advantage and run with it. Literally, because denim cutoff shorts are practical as heck. Pockets? Mobility? 100% yes please. This pair (from H&M last year) is a higher waist and isn’t super tight around the leg which is what I look for.

The distressed style makes it look more lived-in and casual which I think is perfect for this style. I don’t love a perfect denim short. I have some in my closet, but as far as being “in”, I’m not feeling it right now. Sorry about it.

Instead of sandals, which I almost always wear from May 1 – Sept 1, I went with classic Adidas Superstar sneakers. The are slim, simple and never go out of style. Worth an investment in everyone’s wardrobe regardless of age.

The piece de resistance of this look is my white fanny pack. Worn as a crossbody bag and not as a traditional waist bag, it keeps my hands free and keeps the look active overall.

White Linen Top: Macy’s $29.99
Denim Shorts: H&M $19.99, Target $15, Old Navy $20
Adidas Superstars: $59 at Dick’s
Fanny Pack: $34 at Dick’s

Chic and Sexy

This is the easiest look by a long shot. One big long piece of fabric, i.e. “sarong” tied around the waist and “I’m ready!”. I got this one specifically during my eighth grade class trip (circa 2002) to Boston at a street vendor in Quincy Market. I stopped back there two summer ago and she was still there, so check her out if you’re ever in the neighborhood.

Sarongs come in all shapes, styles, patterns and opacities. If you have one ride or die swimsuit you wear all the time, buy one specifically for that. If not, go with one that you can have versatility with as far as color and “vibe”. I.e. you wouldn’t get a paisley print and then wear it over a tribal suit. No way, you would not. Think more abstract for your patterns and stick with neutrals or something with a variety of colors represented. This one I’ve worn with: yellow, hot pink, white, black, green, maroon, etc. You get the idea.

I paired this with faux-leather, flat brown sandals so I could balance the bright tones with something natural which felt more glam than another color into the mix.

As you know from my bio, I refer to myself as a “debatable hoarder”. You don’t get away with keeping things 16+ years if you don’t buy with versatility in mind. Just saying. #justified.

Sarong: Walmart $20.89, LEOPARD from Banana Republic $40
Neutral Sandals: EXACT PAIR Old Navy $19.99

Tropical Resort

Last summer I was coming off a crazy busy spring at work, add in the stress of wedding planning and I was not feeling like my best. I went out to Nordstrom Rack and bought some new one piece suits and some modest cover-ups. I was NOT looking forward to being in public when the weather turned.

This bikini cover up literally gave me my sanity back. First, if I wrap it completely, it looks like a dress! So I belted it to cinch at the waist (for most of us, that’s our narrowest spot in our body). Second, even worn open provides a tremendous amount of coverage of the heiny, thighs and arms. I felt so feminine and beachy without having to sacrifice style or confidence in this.

If you want to pair something like this with shorts, you could even tie the front ends together to make a slouchy top. (I show you how in this weeks video breakdown here:

Because I felt like I was ready for a resort vacation in the Caribbean in this with its bright colors and floral pattern, I wanted to keep the joy of the palette going with some blue sandals (Lauren Conrad for Kohls) and a tan woven fedora (2B by Bebe/old as sin). Just wearing this kimono cover up takes me back to steel drums, Bob Marley music and frozen Pina Coladas.

Kimono Cover Up: Walmart $16.09, Forever 21 $22.99, Nordstrom Rack $22.48
Blue Sandals: Lulus $21, Walmart $24.49
Fedora: Gap $27, Kohls $10.24

The Staples

Featured in every look this week is my yellow bikini from Wish. If you haven’t heard of Wish, it’s a hit or miss shopping app. It usually takes at minimum two weeks for you items to arrive and you must rely HEAVILY on customer reviews and photos before you order, but if you “hit”, you “hit”. I think this suit was somewhere between$2-$6, so all-in with shipping, $10. I won’t link to this one because I don’t want to be responsible for what you receive, but it’s worth a browse.

The shades are my new obsession. I have pretty bad eyesight and dry eye so I’m on daily contacts. Because of this, I am stingy with days that I want to put my contacts in. However, I burn through them in the summer because I want to wear sunglasses. I found these on Zenni Optical and ordered them in my prescription so I can save my dailies. All in all, I bought four pairs of regular glasses and these for a grand total of $62 and change. You can get these with plain lenses also! Linked below.

Sunglasses: Zenni Optical $15.95 (add $5 for sunglasses!)

I get it, you don’t want to think in the summer. It’s hot and there’s too much fun waiting for you to be inside putting together an outfit. Hoping these three looks give you some inspiration to get you out the door faster and fashionably.

Must Have: Braided Leather Belt

June 25, 2020 by Jesse at TTT Filed Under: Must Haves, Outfits 2 Comments

The Unsung Hero Of Summer: Braided Leather Belt

How To Wear A Women’s Braided Belt

I’ve not gone a lot of places this summer for obvious reasons, but every time I have, there’s been one thing in common: a braided leather belt. Every other year this belt has a moment or two and then I forget it exists.

This year, however, I am finding myself reaching for it constantly. Are belts back? I feel like I went YEARS without giving a hoot about them. I think the Gucci belt explosion definitely helped the re-emergence of belts into current fashion again. It’s a status symbol more than anything, but if you’re not willing to spend the several hundo on it and have too much pride to buy the $20 Amazon dupe, you’re looking for ways to recreate these looks sensibly.

About 10-12 years ago I wore a belt on and with everything (specifically, real big wide ones with elastic). I still have a few JUST in case, but they’ve been in hibernation basically since then. Actually, I got this belt in that time frame too. I was working at Abercrombie & Fitch in the Westchester Mall and we would get our discount on clearance items. This one was at our sister store abercrombie (for kids) and I snagged it in the largest size possible so it would fit for a long time.

Let’s talk about why this accessory is a must.

The Color

To me, “Cognac” is the color of summer… perpetually. It has a warm base so it really looks great with neutral earth tones. On the flip side, if you go with stark white or black it really shines versus getting lost. For bright colors, it grounds them a bit so it’s not too Easter-eggish. I find I can pair it with any accessories (shoes and purses) without clashing. Sometimes If I do multiple tones in my accessories it feels sloppy, but adding cognac is never an issue.

Casual Outfit With Braided Belt

The Size

This belt fits PERFECTLY in standard size belt loops. I have had skinny belts and oversized belts in cognac over time, but none of have endured quite like this one. There is a reason standard is the standard! It just does it’s job! Sometimes the job is holding up my pants, sometimes the job is holding together the outfit. By not being a “trendy” size, it holds up over the years.

Earth Tones Outfit With Braided Belt

The Texture

If I’m being totally honest, I don’t remember if it came with worn edges or they are a little rough from being packed and moved several times. I personally like that this looks like a “matte” braided belt leather versus a perfect shine.

I prefer the thicker, looser braids to the perfectly tight braids too. For me, those feel overly styled and they aren’t as summery and less able to stand the test of time. It feels more effortless this way. And, as we know, we live for effortless at Threw This Together.

Women’s Braided Belt With Dress

The Buckle

The buckle of this is also a brushed metallic so I feel like we can get away with pairing it with either gold or silver since it’s not prominent. The combination of the actual color with this metal makes this an ultimate chameleon piece. When looking for yours try to find one that isn’t perfectly shiny and has a lived-in feel.

Where You Can Buy One

I would be shocked if you don’t have one of these in your closet, however, if you somehow don’t or are looking for an upgrade, here are four links under $50 to add one to your lineup.

Amazon $39.99

LL Bean $44.95

Old Navy $19.99

Buckle $29.95

As you can see from the photos throughout the article, there are SO many uses for this item. On a muted palette outfit with white jeans, added to a flowy piece for a braided belt dress, dressing down a black on black style or adding texture to a casual look on a hot day. Let’s see how you style yours!

Three Ways to Wear a Basic Striped Dress

June 23, 2020 by Jesse at TTT Filed Under: Outfits Leave a Comment

Three Ways to Wear A Basic Striped Dress

This week, our hero is one of the most underrated items in my closet. Why this dress is great: The sleeves are the perfect length and structured just the right amount to give your shoulders a great shape and long enough to provide coverage and slim your arms. The length is comfortable and the bottom isn’t so fitted that it rides up.

Another shocking bonus of this dress is that these horizontal stripes actually do NOT make you look wider. I’m not sure what black magic this dress possesses, but I have chosen to accept it despite the fact that I’m probably selling my soul in the process. Maybe it’s because the stripes aren’t the same width? We will go with that. This dress I bought at the secondhand store, but you know I’ve linked some similar ones below.

A striped dress is a must because it is a “basic”, but can be dressed up or down and paired with such a wide variety of accessories. It is the easiest pattern to explore pattern mixing with. I went with animal print this week in the form of snakeskin, BUT a floral, leopard print or polka dots work great without feeling clashy, too.

I almost never wear mini dresses or shorts because I am insecure about the keratosis pilaris on my legs. Never heard of it? It’s basically the worst. It is a skin condition that creates extra keratin around your hair follicles so you have little bumps all over the place. It’s also affectionately known as “chicken skin” (cute). A lot of people have this more prominently on the back of their arms. I have it around my knees and the back of my legs. If this sounds like you and you’re wondering how you can get rid of keratosis pilaris (or KP), I just invested in SkinFix during the last Sephora sale. I’m liking it a lot and have noticed a visible difference so I’m less shy about wearing a short dress these days. (not an ad, I really like it.)

That said, I was going through dresses recently and this one shone like a ray of light from the back of my closet. I think I heard the sound of a choir, too. It really is the best and adaptable for so many situations.

Don’t have one of these in your closet yet, but feel like there’s a spot with its name on it? Here are FIVE under $40! (here, here, here, here and here)

Girls’ Lunch

Striped Dress with Denim Jacket

I went with an all-black accessories palette for this look and kept it very simple. I started with these thick-strapped “wood” sandals. I got these at the same Payless going out of business sale that I got last week’s floral sandals. They are crazy comfortable. I am going to hope and pray chunky heels stay in style for another several years. I wore standard stilettos the other day and was wobbling all over. I am spoiled in these.

Because I wanted to dress it up a bit, I went with this black and gold statement necklace. I made sure it was close enough to the neckline so it didn’t feel too long or out of place. It’s definitely not my biggest necklace and the connectors are very dainty. I like the contrast of the bold stripes with something that feels softer. I debated between two other black necklaces and ended up with this one. Want to hear my thought process? Check out the video!

Lastly, I grabbed my tiniest Coach clutch. This was a bridesmaid gift from a wedding I was in. A great gift, too, because it is such a staple. I often will put all of my important things in it: licenses, cards, key, lipstick, etc. because I can just toss it into any of my other bags easily, or wear it by itself. I THINK my tiny, original iPhone SE even fits into it! Everyone rags on my small phone, but it fits into every single pocket and purse I own so I take the heat because I know I’m the real winner.

HEY! I also found a Coach-brand wristlet on their outlet site for $25 in the link below. S-S-S-SNAG IT!

I did toss a denim jacket over my shoulders since I’m always cold, but you could very easily go without it.

The Spectator

Striped Dress Casual Outfit

You know, it’s weird blogging in a time when we really have very limited places to go and things to do. I totally see this look being perfect for a concert or sporting event. Good luck finding one of those to go to! Regardless, it is a casual and effortless look and will leave you prepared for anything.

I grabbed my favorite worn-in chambray shirt (chambray is a fancy word for denim, really) and tied it around my waist. I live for a way to cinch the waist. We all have one, some more dramatic than others, but tying something around it will always add definition because it will add volume to your lower half and therefore make it look smaller. Voila. I also like that the shirt adds coverage to my heiney, but also that I can put it on if I get chilly. We’ve already established that I probably will get cold so – a must.

Also, please for the love of all things holy, when you tie something around your waist, make sure it is at your WAIST and not your hips. This will make you look wider than you’d like. Unless you have broader shoulders and are trying to balance it out, I would NOT recommend this. How do you find your waist? Bend over side wise and hold your finger in the spot where you naturally crease. That’s your waist! You. Are. Welcome.

No jewelry here because at this fictional event I’m dressed for there I’ll be active and don’t want to lose anything. I added a snakeskin crossbody that picks up the tones of the dress without being matchy matchy. It’s still anchored in black and white tones so it’s the ideal complement. If you’re looking to try pattern mixing, start with a pattern in the same color scheme as a safe first step. I wanted to keep my hands free so this is the perfect solution.

Lastly, I threw on these off-brand Converse inspired sneaks from Target. I have them in black, white and red and they are just as good. Don’t look too close. I was washing my shoelaces and never put them back in. So essentially, a real “threw this together” moment completely evidenced.

Patio Dining

Striped Dress With Sweater

This outfit was inspired by the band, Cake. Can you guess why? They have a song called “short skirt and a long jacket”. Even thought this isn’t a truly “long” jacket nor is it a skirt, it is still longer than the dress itself, so we will give it a pass.

This chunky sweater is a lifesaver. I will wear it around the house over my pajamas in the winter or I will grab it an keep it in the car in case I need something. The color is neutral enough to be all-season and even though it is a thick knit, it is still structured enough to not swallow my frame.

If you are uncomfortable in a short dress or skirt, this is a great way to be able to wear things you may have purchased in the past, but haven’t had the guts to pull them out in a while. It adds more coverage and length and still shows off your dress. If you are googling this to shop, you can search things like “long kimono”, “duster” or “long sweater”. A sheer version would also look great on this!

I added lace up shoes with a modest heel. I thought about my black lace up shoes, but the nude helps my legs look longer, and in this dress I needed all the help I could get. I paired this with a secondhand Michael Kors purse that I could put more warm things inside. If I ever upgrade my phone to something larger, I will probably have to wear this bag more, too.

Are you obsessed yet?

I mentioned a couple higher-level brand name items in today’s post, which won’t be the norm. I’m working on a post for how to get items like this in your budget. And as always, you can always shop the links for similar styles at lower price points.

Whether your striped dress fits exactly like mine, or has a different silhouette, all of these variations would work for you. A wearable dress that never goes out of style is definitely something worth finding hanger space for.

Too long to read? Check out our video talking you through these outfits below. And, not to really persuade you, but I find a REALLY fun surprise in one of my purses in the video that is suuuuuper exciting and I know you’ve all been there.

Three Ways to Wear a Black Midi Skirt

June 16, 2020 by Jesse at TTT Filed Under: Outfits 15 Comments

Three Ways To Wear: Black Midi Skirt

I shied away from the “midi” length for a while. I thought it was super awkward and extremely hard to find shoes that actually worked. As time went on, I warmed up to the midi. What’s not to love? It doesn’t ride up as easily as above the knee styles, less risk if the wind blows, always looks sleek and you only have to shave below the knee. Three times a win!

I was doing a Boohoo.com haul – looking for some affordable dresses for a “non-wedding day photo shoot” (#covidbride), and I saw this pleated, flowy number that I had to try. Plus, it was $16, so basically it bought itself. This one is sold out now, but here are some similar ones – all under $50. FYI – we will get into steals and deals later on.

It arrived and I LOVED it. It was a little longer than I expected, but there was still plenty that could be done with it. I immediately knew it would be a summer (and fall and spring and winter) staple. The length and shape can go from day to night, casual to office, trendy to timeless. I’m already picturing the re-do of this post when we get back to sweater and boot season – OMG YAY – so cute in my head!

For now, I’ve determined three of my fav ways of how to style this black pleated maxi: out and about, soiree chic and to the office. Most of what I’m wearing has been in my closet for years, so I’ve linked to similar items – all under $25 each.

Out and About

Casual Black Midi Skirt Outfit

Probably my favorite of all three looks, just because I can see myself wearing it the most. I tied up a graphic tee that my friend Maria bought me at a concert of my favorite band Dashboard Confessional (I had a very long emo phase). Mine is a ladies’ cut, so it is a slim fit. However, I think if you didn’t have a ladies’-specific tee, the boxiness would still look super cute with this since the fullness of the skirt would balance the top out. Don’t want to tie it up? Just tuck it in!

I paired this with my trusty slip-on black sneakers (They are slim and low-profile so they don’t creep up and cut of the line of my short little legs too much and perfect for when I am running out the door) and a multi-colored clutch to tie in the color from the graphic tee and even more pop to keep it bright and casual.

I was undecided on the necklace and could still go either way. If you want a more sporty spice look, get rid of it. If you like making it more feminine, keep it!

Social Soiree

Dressy Black Midi Skirt Outfit

I was originally going to call this look “Garden Party”, but I don’t know a single person who has actually been to one of those. So here we are…”social soiree”. I love a monochromatic look. It feel like it elevates separates to be a true cohesive outfit. Black on black? Even better. I got this bodysuit for $6.99 (WHAT?!) during the same Boohoo.com haul when I got the skirt. It’s sold out now, but I’ve linked some other options below. Any type of black bodysuit and fitted top would do here.

I also love how tall a monochromatic look can make you appear because you’re not breaking up the line of sight from your shoulders to the bottom of the skirt. It’s a great tip for those of us on the petite side or dangerously close. However, we still want to accessorize in a way that gets us noticed, don’t we? I went with a hot pink clutch that is just big enough to hold my phone, cards, key and lipstick and called it a day. This guy has a strap so you can use it as a wristlet to keep your hands free. I got it secondhand, but I think it was originally from Target.

Let’s talk about this shoe.  The watercolor floral is so soft and versatile. Realistically, I could have accessorized with: yellow, green, blue or white instead of the pink I chose to highlight. That’s the beauty of multi-colored accessories. They provide so much more versatility than a solid and are fun as heck. I got these at a Payless Shoes Going Out of Business Sale, but floral shoes are always going to be in style. I’ve linked a few below. I think the key on finding the right pattern is one that isn’t overly “crisp”, otherwise you run the risk of tablecloth territory.

To The Office

Professional Black Midi Skirt Outfit

As companies continue to adopt less rigid wardrobe guidelines, it has allowed women to take risks in silhouettes that can look feminine, but also fully in-charge. Since this midi skirt is so flowy and unstructured, I wanted to use a traditional top half to keep it professional.

I love a bright blazer. When I was in “Corporate America” I had one in nearly every color. The structure showed polish and organization, the color expressed personality. I paired this red one (from H&M back in the day) with a black and white silk, patterned blouse. I tucked my top into my undies so that it stayed as streamlined as possible. You don’t want it to balloon out of your waistband. A blazer can already add bulk to you, so this is an important step. You could use a bodysuit or a fitted top here just the same in order to fix this problem.

I liked that the pattern was angular, again, which feels more professional than something floral or swirly. Lots of unspoken messages in this outfit. Once closing time hits, you can shed the blazer and head to whatever is the next item on your agenda!

I thought it was important that I paired this “inspo” outfit with a bag I would have actually used on a busy work day. This one in particular has great details – suede end panels and fringe that would definitely draw some attention. It was a free Victoria’s Secret giveaway if you purchased a mountain of pink-colored items back in the day. I just flip the logo toward the inside to keep it “profesh”. If you work in a more traditional office setting, maybe a tote with more structure and less flair would suit you better.

I am not linking to plain black pumps, because there is nothing special about these and likely every woman already has a pair in her closet. If not, invest in a pair. I like to have a round toe and a pointy toe in my closet at all times. You can almost never go wrong with a black pump. This is my PSA. Thank you.

So there you have it. I hope it didn’t take you nearly as much convincing as it took me to finally click “add to cart” on a Black Midi Skirt. It’s a staple that will allow you to reuse time and time again, and likely look different on each occasion.

Throwing This Together

June 16, 2020 by Jesse at TTT Filed Under: Throwin' It Together 3 Comments

Raise your hand if you ever stand in your closet, stare at your clothes and say “I have nothing to wear”. Raise your hand if you get a huge confidence boost when someone compliments your look. And lastly, raise your hand if you think that a great outfit can change your attitude. If you raised your hand at least once, keep reading. And by “raised your hand” I mean agreed silently, because let’s face it, even when we write LOL, we are usually not actually laughing so I definitely don’t expect you to act like you’re back in school while reading this.

Still with me? Ok, grool. During “quarantine”, I emptied out ALL of our closets in our home. They were mostly full of…. my clothes. I sorted through every single article of clothing, tried it on, possibly did some weeping when they didn’t fit the same way and decided its fate. We’re talking items I’ve had since HIGH SCHOOL. I know, you’re looking at me thinking, big deal, that was only a few years ago for her ;-). Anyway, THREE HUNDRED PIECES LATER…… now in garbage bags full of donations and hand me downs made me realize not only that I am a borderline hoarder, but that it was time to downsize my wardrobe collection.

That said, I live for variety, looking cute and feeling fabulous and I’m not ready to sacrifice any of those parts of my style. So I gave myself a mental challenge: wear the pieces you love, but find different ways to wear them. I have so many items that I only wear with one or two other separates. It’s time to think bigger and live dangerously (overstatement, but work with me here). Instead of categorizing items like “work pants”, “dress skirt”, etc. Let’s make those pants work for an evening out somehow and find a way for that skirt to be something I run errands in.

Since most of what I’m working with are closet DINOSAURS, there aren’t a lot of those exact items still in stores, but I will link to similar items if you are feeling so inclined. I’m going to try to focus on keeping all linked items between $25 – $50. I get so frustrated when I see a cute top on social media and I click through and it’s…. $96! Trust me, if I lived that life, I would totally go for it. Well, actually, even if I did live that life, the thrill of a deal is something I live for.

I’ve been styling myself for approximately 30 years (Mom, can you confirm?) and I’ve been styling others through my personal branding and pageant consulting business for a decade. I’ll pass down tricks of the trade and explain why pieces work together and why they won’t in the hopes that you, too, can feel more empowered to take risks you wouldn’t have considered before. I also know that not everyone has my body type, and silhouettes are not one size fits all. I’ve got you covered there, too.

We are doing this. We are going to rediscover our closets and throw things together that we never would have tried before. We are going to pull out tops, skirts, jackets, accessories that maybe haven’t gotten love in a while and make them fabulous so we feel fabulous. We are going to redefine what style is for ourselves. And it’s going to be really fun.
